Using improper equipment or not strictly adhering to the safety guidelines imposed by the FAA can not only result in dangerous situations, but it can result in steep fines as well. Spirit Airlines was recently notified of a proposed FAA penalty of $50,000 for knowingly operating an aircraft with a mechanical problem.
